How Conor McGregor will KO Floyd Mayweather – Episode 173

The Story: What factors does Conor McGregor have in his favour?

Both Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are sporting personalities who have transcended their sports. People who don’t care about competitive fighting know who they are and what they do. When you ask many what will happen on August 26th in Las Vegas when they step in the boxing ring, the answer seems obvious – Floyd is an undefeated champion boxer, and Conor is coming from another sport, therefore Floyd will win. In fact, there are more factors involved.

It’s true that Floyd has a perfect record of 49 wins and zero losses, and by anyone’s estimation he is a top-level fighter. However, he has never fought someone like Conor before. Conor comes from different disciplines, and has all of the insight which comes from studying different styles of movement. Conor is taller and has a longer reach than Floyd, which is something Floyd rarely faces. At 40, Floyd is very old for an athlete, and nearly two years have passed since his last fight.

Floyd has had problems with his fragile hands throughout his career, eventually leading him to a defensive fighting style, studying his opponent for the first few rounds, and learning their moves, then eventually winning by decision. Conor is more likely to put the pressure on, and go for a knockout within the first four rounds, as he did against champion José Aldo, ending the fight in 13 seconds.

With bookmakers setting McGregor as an underdog, paying $4.50 for every dollar bet, they’re estimating that his chance of winning is around 23%. In this episode, gambler and martial arts enthusiast Luke Petersen makes the case of why he is betting on McGregor to win by KO in the first four rounds.

The Story: Slip ups in our universe simulation

When many educated people in developed nations hear about an unusual event, something paranormal, supernatural or just plain weird, will always say “I’m sure there’s a simple, rational explanation.” And for most events, there are simple rational explanations. However, if you examine evidence of weird situations, sooner or later you will find something that you cannot explain.

Redditors on the Glitch in the Matrix subreddit like to share and analyse many such cases, thinking about odd occasions where it seems that someone stepped into another reality, or when time skipped, going forward or backward an hour, when someone dreamt exactly what would happen, or even where a person got caught up in a scenario where they almost certainly would die – only to find themselves instantly transported to a safe place kilometres away, in a phenomenon known as “quantum immortality”.

After reading hundreds of these stories, it would be difficult for even the most hardcore skeptic to say that there’s always “a rational explanation”. It seems that maybe, we don’t live in a sensible, rational universe. Maybe, this universe is more incomprehensible than we imagined, a mysterious place where little miracles happen every day.

The Story: How to pay for your dreams

Many people have seen “The Secret” and are familiar with its claim that people can manifest their desires simply by imagining them. Others think this view is a fantasy – how can your thoughts really affect reality?

In fact, there is already scientific data to support the claim on some level – data that shows your attitude affects your health. If your attitude can have subtle effects on your own body, it may have subtle effects on your surroundings, the interactions you have with other people. I know this to be true from my own experience attempting to charm women. If you expect that the woman won’t be interested in you, you will falter, and she will see your lack of faith. If you believe that the woman will be attracted to you or want to date you, that prophecy will fulfill itself.

Projecting those points, we can guess that it goes even deeper than that. Feeling the emotions of a scene you imagine from the future brings that scene into reality.

Some will respond, “You can’t get something for nothing!” and this seems sensible. To get something good, you must give something good. What they might not realise is, value goes far beyond the hours you put in at work, the unpaid overtime, or the money you invest. You are in a position to provide value to those around you in every waking moment – by giving them a smile, a compliment, encouraging them, even just by being vulnerable and showing your humanity.

Everything is Meaningless – Episode 169

The Story: Life has the meaning that you put into it

When you’re a child, life can seem simple. Perhaps the adults around you even give you a simple framework with which to view the world – something like, God loves you, Jesus died for your sins, and as long as you love God and do good, it will be alright. You accept this as a valid interpretation of events – and perhaps you even believe it is the only valid interpretation. Many people live their lives in this way. Perhaps occasionally they have a niggling doubt, but in some way they make it work and feel happy.

Others won’t be so satisfied with a belief system like that. When they start to see the holes, it’s the beginning of the end. Sooner or later, it’s going to click with them that the interpretation of the world that was given to you, was a lie. You plunge into existential despair, not really knowing what to believe. You become a nihilist. “Everything is meaningless,” you say. But then you go a little too far. “Therefore, life is pointless.” You might even believe that you’re special for having discovered this secret, and for the deep-seated dread that you feel in reaction to it. And in a way, you’d be right.

Remember, there is no pressure. No one will force you to evolve. You can stay at any one of these levels as long as you wish.

But, in your own time, you do evolve. You’re not content with the empty cup of meaninglessness. You decide to set your own rules, play your own game. You decide who you are and what you accept from yourself. Some people might call that “self-actualisation”. You know that life is meaningless, you embrace it as true, and you see it as a blank canvas on which to create your own masterpiece, designing a form of living which delights your soul. Because, why not?

It’s hard to predict the future – Episode 168

The Story: It takes more than a couple of trends to see past tomorrow

If you’ve never attempted to predict the future, and someone comes to you with a graph showing a clear trend, you might be tempted into thinking that that person knows what’s going to happen. The numbers don’t lie, and all we have to do is see where they go, to know what’s going to happen. Right? Wrong.

If you have tried to look into the future, and spent more than a few hours pondering about what the world will look like in five or ten years, you will know that it takes more than one graph or one trend line. Futurism requires looking at many trends, projecting how they might continue, and then imagining how they might interact – how one trend will accelerate another, and cause others to reverse.

Intelligent people, even be experts in their field, may recognise current trends, but that doesn’t mean that they have the skills to see where things will go in coming years. The problem is compounded when experts don’t recognise that futurism is actually outside their area of expertise.

In 1894, horse manure was such a problem in large cities that the New York Times predicted that in 50 years, the city would be covered by 9 feet of horse manure. It made perfect sense – that’s where the trend line lead. Likewise, people might tell you today that less and less jobs are being created, and when the new wave of automation arrives, young people will be permanently unemployed. Or they will tell you that the high birth rates of middle eastern countries compared to western countries mean that western culture will simply be bred out of existence.

Bitcoin Price Explosion: Luis Fernando Mises – Episode 167

The Story: The prices of digital currencies are going crazy

In late 2013, the price of Bitcoin started exploding, going from around $120, to close to $1200, within 3 months. People in the digital currency realm were stunned and amazed, and many people (including myself) started buying up currencies, chasing the Bitcoin bullet train. “This time it’s different,” we thought. “Who knows if the price will ever come down?” we thought. A few months later, the price came rolling down, eventually settling around $450. A lot of people surely lost a lot of money in those months, buying high and selling low. That was when I learned a simple lesson: the best time to buy an asset is when nobody gives a shit about it.

Now it’s June 2017, and in the past three months we’ve seen Bitcoin shoot up from around $1000 to more than $2500 – even to $3000 in some markets. I see people on social media boasting about their winnings, parading the fact that they have assets worth hacking. I tell them to be careful, that trading at all time highs can be a recipe for disaster. They tell me “The dollar is crashing against crypto!” and “This time it’s different!” I know some will probably lose a lot when the bull market ends, still believing that they’re digital currency genii and know how to pick winners. Others will prudently and consistently take profits, and wait for another opportunity to buy big.

In this episode, I welcome back Luis Fernando Mises, business consultant, entrepreneur, spiritual healer and digital currency investor, to discuss the latest rise in Bitcoin and altcoins, and what pitfalls people should look out for. The Story: Priorities your life’s work

For a lot of writers and other creative people, it’s common to wake up with a clear purpose of creating something, yet somehow by 10pm, you’ll always hear them mumble under their breath “shit!” They got distracted by work, taking care of bills and other day-to-day nonsense – so much that they didn’t write a word or scribble a drawing towards their project. Perhaps it’s always goes that way because so many people make their job a priority, when they should be making their work a priority – staying in the office 40 or 50 hours a week when their magnum opus gets a mere half hour.

If you have a project which is really important to you, you should find a way to make time for it. If you can’t, then perhaps you need to re-organise your life so that project is at the forefront. You could start working part time, start working for yourself so you can set your own schedule, or even expatriate and live in a country where a minimum amount of dollars allows you to live comfortably.

Flat Earthers and Globeheads – Episode 165

The Story: Easily disproven arguments about the shape of the earth

There’s one huge debate of recent years which almost nobody in the world saw coming – the debate over the shape of the earth. Flat-earthers insist that there is something fishy going on when it comes to NASA photographs and footage from other space agencies – perhaps even a conspiracy spread all over the world to prevent us knowing the true shape of the earth, dating back hundreds of years, including members of the Freemasons such as Isaac Newton, inventing brilliant lies that have confused people for generations. Even today, millions of people are confused – some are confused because of the bizarre information about the earth being flat, and others are confused because they don’t understand how anyone could believe such a thing.

The debate rages on in image boards, message boards and Facebook groups, and it seems to be no closer to reaching a conclusion. Part of the problem is, many people are have been raised believing that the earth is a globe – but never had cause to question it, or find ways to prove it. So, when the flat-earthers came along and started obsessing over it, researching for hours a day and questioning it, globe-earthers were completely intellectually unprepared. Unless you’re a physicist or have an extremely quick wit, when someone asks you to defend a belief that you’ve never had to defend… your arguments are going to be shit.

In this episode, Kurt looks at some of the arguments that come up on both sides of the debate, and why many of the common ones are easily dismissed. He also explains the best evidence he has seen so far that the earth is curved, and perhaps even spheroidal.
