The Story:

Before the fall of the USSR, the medical system in Moscow was completely controlled by the state. The price calculation problem rendered the managers of hospitals and the medical industry as a whole, unable to determine how many beds, how many doctors and how many medical supplies were necessary to treat the patients. This lead to all sorts of perverse results. In 1987, minister of health Yevgeny Chazov found that 40% of newly graduated doctors couldn’t read a cardiogram. Newborns would receive 200-400 shots in their first year of life. Patients were subjected to seemingly endless lists before they could receive treatment. And dying patients were thrown into the cold, cold street, to ensure that their deaths wouldn’t adversely affect the statistics of the hospital.

In June 2015, at time of writing, Australia is not a socialist country (yet). However, it does have socialist elements. The currency is created by a central bank (more or less) controlled by the government. The public school system is a socialist institution. And the public healthcare system is a socialist institution.

March, 2015. Dr. Gabrielle McMullin makes an appearance on Australian station ABC radio to talk about her book “Pathways to Gender Equality”. In this interview, she broached the subject of sexual harassment in the Australian medical industry. She made the controversial, and twisted, ironic statement: “What I tell my trainees is that, if you are approached for sex, probably the safest thing to do in terms of your career is to comply with the request.” Dr. McMullin wasn’t condoning sexual harassment, but she was intending to bring light how real the problem is, and how it can affect the careers of many young people in this industry. Surgeons are seen as too important to question, and when younger doctors or nurses question them, they are seen as liabilities.

Based on our personal experiences, we can say that the problems with this industry don’t end there. There are problems all through this industry. Our question is: what are the effects when you give control of one of the most important services of modern life to politicians and other bureaucrats? Are there certain economic factors which make these situations more or less inevitable? And can we talk about these issues while still making them seem amusing? We ask these questions and more, in this exciting episode of … The Paradise Paradox!

The Story:

Thursday, May 14th 2015, Chihuahua, Mexico. A group of five children aged 11 to 15 knock on the door of their neighbour, Christopher Raymundo Márquez Mora, 6 years old. They ask Christopher if he wants to come play with them and gather some firewood. Christopher obliged. The children told Christopher that they wanted to play a game of kidnapping. Christopher Márquez was never seen alive again.

Days later, the Missing Persons Unit started questioning the youths, as they were the last people seen with Christopher. Their stories quickly became contradictory, and soon they were confessing to an awful crime. They had tied Christopher up, nearly suffocated him with a metal bar, stoned him to death, removed his eyes from his head, stabbed him several times in the back, and buried him in a shallow grave. The children covered the grave with weeds and a dead animal, presumably to mask the smell and stop any predator from digging up the corpse.

This case is particularly shocking in its brutality. On the whole, the world is becoming less violent. But a lot of violent cases still occur. In Australia, tens of people die per year as a result of being hit with no warning – what’s now known as a “coward’s punch”. Then there are reported cases of college students killing homeless in the USA as a sort of game.

What could have inspired these young boys and girls to murder Christopher Márquez? What cultural factors might be involved in producing such deadly games? Do people really know what morality is, or do they just think of what they can get away with? Do people know what it means to have a moral compass? We ask these questions and more in this exciting chapter of … The Paradise Paradox!

The Story:

The date is the 30th of December, 2007. The place is State House Nairobi, Kenya. Incumbent President Mwai Kibaki is being sworn in again, after his re-election, and after a hurried recount. Kibaki gave his speech, calling for healing and reconciliation after this unexpected election result. There was one key problem for Kibaki: the elections had been a fraud, and everyone knew it. Nobody really knows exactly how the violence started, but the riots that followed were a cry from a people who had been defrauded one too many times.

A handful of bloggers and software developers, all current or previous residents of Kenya, were coding desperately, working on a brilliant idea to allow order to arise out of chaos. They were creating a program which would become known as “Ushahidi” – the word for “Testimony” in Swahili. Ushahidi is a system that enables anyone in the area to email or text and make a report, whether it be a report of violence, a riot, or note that a medical team is available. Previously this type of system would only be at the disposal of large news services with thousands of dollars to spend on software. Now it is free, and it has been used to track many disasters and large events since. By releasing it, the Ushahidi team had created a new type of sharing economy – a sharing economy of information, activist mapping.

These days, new websites and apps enabling sharing of resources are popping up every month. Of course the most famous is Uber, but then there is also Lyft for carpooling; Getaround and Relayride for renting cars; Blablacar for organising roadtrips; Couchsurfing and Airbnb for sharing your spare room; Liquid for sharing your pushbike; Neighborgoods for sharing your lawnmower or other household device, and even Poshmark for sharing your wardrobe. Entrepreneurs are concentrating their mental energies to think what other devices or possessions could be shared, to create a mutually beneficial relationship: those with goods lying dormant get money from renting them, the renter gets a device at a good price in a convenient location, and the site gets a slice of the action too.

What else will we see people share in the coming years? Home gym? Bedroom banger home studios? Food that they were about to throw out? Their partners? Who in the name of Odin’s beard even knows! We ask these questions and more in this exciting chapter of … The Paradise Paradox!

The Story:

It’s the 29th of September, 1913. We’re in Antwerp, Belgium. Rudolf Diesel calmly boards the steamboat Dresden, and is escorted by a porter to his cabin. That night, Diesel dines with the passengers and retires at 10 p.m. He takes out his diary, turns to today’s date, and draws a single cross. That was the last time Rudolf Diesel was ever seen alive – a mysterious and remarkable death of a remarkable man.

1894, Berlin, Germany. Diesel filled the tank of his combustion engine with oil, and pulled the string to fire it up. The resulting explosion could have killed him, but by a stroke of luck he emerged unscathed. Despite the great risk he was undertaking with his life, and despite the odds, inspired by his wish to level the playing field between craftsmen and monolithic factories, Diesel persevered. Two years later he demonstrated a combustion engine with a theoretical efficiency of 75%, blowing the steam engine’s 10% out of the water. By 1898, Diesel was a millionaire.

This was the engine that could ignite fuel without using a spark, and that was what made his name – or at least his last name – a household name. What people don’t know is that Diesel wasn’t using petroleum, but biofuel. The oil that almost killed him, and the oil that lead to his success, was made from the humble peanut.

For many years, people used diesel fuel made from petroleum, but now in the 21st century, there have been predictions for many decades that the world is fast approaching peak oil – the condition in which every litre of oil extracted is accompanied by a litre or more of water used to flush it out. People around the world are seeking alternatives, and using a product that’s renewable such as vegetable oil is a very attractive option. With a homemade product, people are getting a discount of up to 80% at the pump. It’s 10% less toxic than table salt, much safer to transport than petroleum diesel due to its high flash point (300°F/149°C), can extend the life of a diesel engine, and, with exhaust that smells like popcorn or french fries, it’s hard to say no.

But it’s not just oil that people are turning to. More and more people are looking to the reduced prices of solar panels to provide electricity to their homes, buying electric cars, or converting their cars into electric cars. Beyond that, people are looking at ways to reduce their use of resources and energy in general, turning to solutions such as tiny houses – houses around 25 m² or 270 square feet, or “Earthships” – self-sustaining houses.

How might we see the energy industry change in the next few years? What new sources of power will people find? What ways will they find to reduce their use of electricity, or avoid it entirely? We ask these questions, and might even supply some of the answers, in this exciting chapter of… The Paradise Paradox!

The Story:

March 3, 1991, Los Angeles, California. Rodney Glen King III was watching a ball game with a few friends, knocking back a few cold ones. After the game, King was heading west on the Foothill Freeway with two of his buddies, Bryant Allen and Freddie Helms. Around 12:30 a.m., King noticed a police car. The police also noticed him. King’s car was speeding, and being on parole from a robbery he committed in 1989, he knew that if the police pulled him over, it would lead to all sorts of legal problems. King didn’t pull over. He gunned it.

The police pursued the car, off the freeway and into residential areas, reaching speeds of 80 miles per hour (almost 130 km/h). After 8 miles (nearly 13 km) the police cornered King. Allen and Helms had the crap beaten out of them. Helms’ baseball cap was handed over the police, still bloody, and he was treated for a laceration on the top of his head. King himself, after being subdued, was hit several times. He later claimed to have received “11 skull fractures, permanent brain damage, broken [bones and teeth], kidney damage [and] emotional and physical trauma”. The footage shows moments King is laying on the ground, obviously not a threat to anybody. And yet the police continue to beat the everloving shit out of him.

All this might have just been another night on the beat for the LAPD, if not for one concerned onlooker, who decided to put the majority of the incident on video. The people (or at least some people) of the United States were shocked. Returning public perception to what it once was would be about as easy as returning a stone to the hand from which it was thrown.

The prevalence of video cameras nowadays, in combination with the World Wide Web, give this power to all of us – the power to record a single event which can change the course of a life – to change the course of history. It gives us the power to resist the oppression of bureaucrats who decide to overstep the boundaries of their office. It gives the world a voice.

How can we use this power to benefit humanity? What kind of responsibility does it take to wield a camera, or to type words into a blog? Are we yet to see the full effects of these technological developments on established media companies? Are we yet to see the change in consciousness where people can handle these new frontiers of information? We explore these questions and more, in the next exciting episode of … The Paradise Paradox!

The Story:

It’s Friday, April 24, 1964, at about 5:50 p.m. We’re in Socorro, New Mexico, USA. Police officer Lonnie Zamora notices something unusual in the dry creek bed by the road. It has a metallic appearance, so naturally he assumes some kids had been speeding and overturned their vehicle. He drives towards the craft, radioes to dispatch, and gets out to help. However, as he gets closer he notices the strange, white aluminium appearance of the vehicle, and the large red symbol on the side. He notices two small adults or large kids, wearing white coveralls. They disappear behind the vehicle when they notice Zamora. Moments later, Zamora hears a loud roaring sound, starting at a high frequency and getting lower. Zamora hits the ground, thinking an explosion is imminent. When he looks again, the craft is gone. When Sergeant Chavez arrives at the scene, there is scorched earth and the bushes are still burning.

This is a somewhat unusual case. A close encounter of the third kind, with more than two witnesses of good reputation – a farmer had also reported talking to two men in white coveralls, claiming he had a conversation with them about their expedition from Mars to Earth. But perhaps the most unusual thing about this case, is that the US Air Force acknowledged that they could not explain it.

In a secret report for Project Blue Book, the US Air Force UFO investigation program, Major Hector Quintanilla wrote this: “There is no doubt that Lonnie Zamora saw an object which left quite an impression on him. There is also no question about Zamora’s reliability. He is a serious police officer, a pillar of his church, and a man well versed in recognizing airborne vehicles in his area. He is puzzled by what he saw and frankly, so are we. This is the best-documented case on record, and still we have been unable, in spite of thorough investigation, to find the vehicle or other stimulus that scared Zamora to the point of panic.”

Years after Blue Book was closed, scientific consultant for the project, Dr. Josef Allen Hynek made this statement in an interview: “I know, having been in Blue Book for, nearly twenty years, that whenever an interesting case came up, the very last thing in the world they would do, is to notify the media. and when the media themselves found out something. The air force did its best to play it down – call it a balloon, call it a star…”

So here we have a case where a member of the program has all but admitted that the purpose of the program was to dismiss accounts of UFOs, and yet here is a shining example of an incident that cannot be explained away. What does this indicate about the truth of unidentified aerial phenomena?

In this episode, Aaron and Kurt go through Special Report 14 of Project Blue Book, analyse their data, their methods and their conclusions. We also go through the Lonnie Zamora incident and talk about what these reports might mean in terms of a public relations device, or in scientific terms. The Story:

On November 28, 1953, Frank Olson’s body sailed peacefully through the air for a few short seconds, then slammed against the pavement below. He had dropped from the 13th story of the Hotel Statler in Manhattan. He was dead. Olson was a CIA agent, and had been dosed with LSD, most likely without his consent. This tragic story is quite possibly the origin of the popular belief that LSD causes people to believe they can fly, and jump out of windows. The problem with that is, forensic data from 1994 shows that Olson was knocked unconscious before he fell. It is unlikely that the thought of flying ever crossed his mind. Olson was pushed out of the window.

Olson was involved in a CIA project known as MKULTRA, an operation in mind control with many stated intentions, such as: discovering a truth serum to extract information from spies, finding out how possible it is to control people – specifically to create double agents, and making a public figure appear crazy, with the intent to discredit them. The circumstantial evidence indicates that, perhaps Olson knew too much, perhaps he was preparing to blow the whistle, and perhaps that’s why he met his untimely demise.

MKULTRA involved many clandestine operations, including Project Midnight Climax. In this op, the CIA set up a few brothels in a few US cities, and paid prostitutes to administer the LSD to the johns. In Subproject 68, a front organisation was established in Canada, and Dr. Donald Ewen Cameron was paid to conduct experiments on his patients, most likely without the knowledge that he was involved in a CIA program. On his subjects, Cameron used hallucinogenic drugs, sensory deprivation, electro-convulsive treatment, and electromagnetic radiation. Some of his patients lost their memories entirely – unable to talk, unable to walk, and incontinent, just as an infant.

Today, we can see cases such as David Shayler, a former MI5 operative who became a whistleblower, leaking documents about MI5’s investigation into members of parliament, and later questioning the official stories of 9/11 and 7/7. Shayler became discredited publicly when he declared himself to be a divine consciousness, started living in a squat, under the name of Delores Kane, his/her transvestite alter ego.

Another case is that of Karen Hudes, a whistleblower from the World Bank exposing corruption in the international financial system. In 2014 she started speaking about the races of extraterrestrials that are controlling the world. This affected her public image considerably.

In the intelligence community, there is a well-known formula: Capability + Intent = Threat. The experiments of the CIA indicate their capability to affect people mentally, though we don’t necessarily know the full extent of their abilities. The fact that they are an intelligence organisation indicates that they do have the motivation to discredit people. The historical precedent demonstrates how far they outside the law they are willing to go – to the point of drugging random civilians to see what happens. These factors, without a doubt, comprise a threat.

In this episode, Aaron and Kurt explore these issues, and ask how the CIA’s work could still affect the world today. What other experiments did they perform? How might intelligence agencies use this knowledge to manipulate public opinion? How much do we actually know? Join us in this intelligence-gathering mission as we move into the next exciting chapter of The Paradise Paradox!

The Story:

The date was May 1st, 2015. I picked up my phone and noticed an unread message. “Do you know something about the narcobloqueos?”

“Hm… no. What’s that?”

“Aahh okay. Some shitty thing about narcos.”

I don’t own a television, don’t listen to the radio, and so sometimes remain in a state of blissful ignorance about the outside world, so I had no idea that on nine roads and highways in Guadalajara, there were burning buses, allegedly set on fire by agents of drug cartels – specifically the Jalisco New Generation cartel. Seven people were killed that day, mostly police officers and military. Twelve were injured, and three people went missing. It also meant my friend couldn’t catch the bus to her home in El Salto.

I asked a few people about it, and the response was that it happened every election season. The rumour was one of conspiracy. The theory is that every election, the government, in collusion with the drug cartels, does something to spook the people just a little bit. Then, whoever is in government can swoop in, saying that they will be extra hard on drug traffickers, appearing as the hero to anyone who isn’t paying enough attention to know what is really going on. The cartel refrains from burning any buses for a few months or a few years, and it appears that these violent symptoms have been pacified. Naturally, the core issue remains unaddressed.
About two weeks ago, I saw a protest in downtown Guadalajara.

A little more than a year ago, the second largest market in downtown Guadalajara, Mercado Corona, had gone up in flames, and with no official investigation, and little investigation in general. Nobody can say for sure who did it. However, a certain statesman was, just a few months previously, calling for the demolition redevelopment of that exact piece of real estate, it’s not surprising that suspicious people are quick to ask questions. And they are right to ask questions. A people that is not suspicious of its government will quickly get lead astray.

North of the border, in Baltimore, Maryland, on the 27th of April, the media started reporting a riot. Again, suspicious people started to question. For reports of a riot, the media seemed to have a lot more footage of police officers, than they did of actual rioters.  Then, a lone CNN camera managed to capture what appeared to be a carefully choreographed performance involving a young protester being abducted by the police.

It is in the interest of the media to sensationalise events. Humans seem to have an evolutionary instinct to react to bad news, and that keeps people glued to their TV sets. But is there more to this story than sensational journalism?

In both of these cases, there are interests who are trying to manipulate public opinion, whether it be the narcotraffickers, the media, or the governments. In this episode, we attempt to analyse some of those factors and speculate on who might benefit from a conspiracy beyond what you can view on your television.

Episode 30 – Illuminatus! How does the Illuminati affect our lives?

I (Kurt) have been interested in wacky conspiracy theories for years, more so after I read Robert Anton Wilson and Robert O’Shea’s book “The Illuminatus! Trilogy”, in which they compiled all the wacky conspiracy theories they received in the letter department while working at Playboy, and turned them into a brilliant work of fiction.

In more recent years, “Illuminati” has become part of the common vernacular, with many people claiming that many famous celebrities such as Rihanna, Jay-Z and Kanye West are initiated members. But what does it even mean to be an illuminatus?

“Illuminati” is broadly defined as any group claiming to have access to special knowledge, or claiming a special enlightenment. By that definition, there are scores of groups who could go by that title: the Alumbrados in Spain, the Knights Templar, Freemasons, the Astrum Argentum, the Ordo Templi Orientis, and of course the Bavarian Illuminati. Even the inner circle of Scientology would qualify as an illuminati. So what do people really mean when they say “Illuminati”? My guess is, they probably don’t know.

There are some people who talk about occult symbols in video clips, such as YouTuber Mark Dice. In 2014, Dice found that his channel had been suspended, and all his videos deleted. Could it be because he said something that was a little too close to the truth? Or perhaps he just pissed off the wrong YouTube staff member.

There are claims, which have been especially prominent in Britain in recent years, of Satanic cults involved in disturbing behaviour such as ritual sacrifice, cannibalism, and mass child abuse. These cults allegedly involve many members of the community: doctors, lawyers, teachers, politicians… What is the basis for these claims? If these groups really do exist, could they be indicative of something even darker, even more disturbing and controlling?
