The Mystery in the Glitches in the Matrix – Episode 171

The Story: Slip ups in our universe simulation

When many educated people in developed nations hear about an unusual event, something paranormal, supernatural or just plain weird, will always say “I’m sure there’s a simple, rational explanation.” And for most events, there are simple rational explanations. However, if you examine evidence of weird situations, sooner or later you will find something that you cannot explain.

Redditors on the Glitch in the Matrix subreddit like to share and analyse many such cases, thinking about odd occasions where it seems that someone stepped into another reality, or when time skipped, going forward or backward an hour, when someone dreamt exactly what would happen, or even where a person got caught up in a scenario where they almost certainly would die – only to find themselves instantly transported to a safe place kilometres away, in a phenomenon known as “quantum immortality”.

After reading hundreds of these stories, it would be difficult for even the most hardcore skeptic to say that there’s always “a rational explanation”. It seems that maybe, we don’t live in a sensible, rational universe. Maybe, this universe is more incomprehensible than we imagined, a mysterious place where little miracles happen every day.

Kurt explores these bizarre cases, and even more bizarre cases, in another reality-defying episode of… The Paradise Paradox!

Skeptic meets ghost: Luke Petersen – Episode 133

The Story: A skeptic starts to wonder about supernatural events

On the Internet, it’s easy to find communities of skeptics who discuss the universe and debunk unusual occurrences, finding ways explain the world within our current understanding of it. They believe that there is little unknown to humans; that everything that we can perceive is more-or-less explainable by modern science. Yet, if you start with the assumption that you already know everything, it might be easy to overlook things which provide avenues to new knowledge – to ignore the gateways to the unknown – to new and exciting pursuits.

Some of these skeptics are willing to go to great lengths to dismiss strange events, even to dismiss events that are part of their direct experience. Yet occasionally, something happens to a skeptic which he is not able to ignore. What happens when a skeptic meets a ghost?

In this episode, Kurt has a conversation with Luke Petersen, a long-term skeptic who, after encountering unusual evidence, decided that, instead of dismissing it, he would begin to wonder. We talk about Luke’s experience with ghosts in his apartment building, about Kurt’s experiences with ghosts, weird dreams, psychological drives of hardcore skeptics, going to haunted houses, and the Mandela effect.

The Story:

Everyone has had the experience of having a sock go mysteriously missing, apparently without a trace. You can open up the lint trap, search behind the washing machine, and turn it upside down, but there is nothing to be found. Is it just a case of a misplaced sock, or is there something stranger at play?

Some people have also reported unusual appearances of objects. An innocuous towel carefully folded on the stair. A USB stick with documents pertaining to a foreign company, arriving on the desk in the middle of the day. And of course, socks spontaneously reappearing at precise intervals, coming out of the wash as if they’d never left.

Are there people breaking into homes and inserting objects just to make life interesting? Are there 6th dimensional wormholes opening up in the spin cycle? Is our universe a simulation with glitches that only affect unattended items of clothing moving in a clockwise direction at greater than 20km/h? We ask these questions and more, in the next sock-disintegrating episode of … The Paradise Paradox!
