Alien economics – The ideas economy

In the evolution of money, first comes barter, then goods like silver, gold and conch shells, then comes fiat currency, then cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin. What comes next? At each step of the way, people trade something which represents an idea – the idea of labour, or the idea of value provided. What if we could trade ideas themselves?

The Story:

It’s Friday, April 24, 1964, at about 5:50 p.m. We’re in Socorro, New Mexico, USA. Police officer Lonnie Zamora notices something unusual in the dry creek bed by the road. It has a metallic appearance, so naturally he assumes some kids had been speeding and overturned their vehicle. He drives towards the craft, radioes to dispatch, and gets out to help. However, as he gets closer he notices the strange, white aluminium appearance of the vehicle, and the large red symbol on the side. He notices two small adults or large kids, wearing white coveralls. They disappear behind the vehicle when they notice Zamora. Moments later, Zamora hears a loud roaring sound, starting at a high frequency and getting lower. Zamora hits the ground, thinking an explosion is imminent. When he looks again, the craft is gone. When Sergeant Chavez arrives at the scene, there is scorched earth and the bushes are still burning.

This is a somewhat unusual case. A close encounter of the third kind, with more than two witnesses of good reputation – a farmer had also reported talking to two men in white coveralls, claiming he had a conversation with them about their expedition from Mars to Earth. But perhaps the most unusual thing about this case, is that the US Air Force acknowledged that they could not explain it.

In a secret report for Project Blue Book, the US Air Force UFO investigation program, Major Hector Quintanilla wrote this: “There is no doubt that Lonnie Zamora saw an object which left quite an impression on him. There is also no question about Zamora’s reliability. He is a serious police officer, a pillar of his church, and a man well versed in recognizing airborne vehicles in his area. He is puzzled by what he saw and frankly, so are we. This is the best-documented case on record, and still we have been unable, in spite of thorough investigation, to find the vehicle or other stimulus that scared Zamora to the point of panic.”

Years after Blue Book was closed, scientific consultant for the project, Dr. Josef Allen Hynek made this statement in an interview: “I know, having been in Blue Book for, nearly twenty years, that whenever an interesting case came up, the very last thing in the world they would do, is to notify the media. and when the media themselves found out something. The air force did its best to play it down – call it a balloon, call it a star…”

So here we have a case where a member of the program has all but admitted that the purpose of the program was to dismiss accounts of UFOs, and yet here is a shining example of an incident that cannot be explained away. What does this indicate about the truth of unidentified aerial phenomena?

In this episode, Aaron and Kurt go through Special Report 14 of Project Blue Book, analyse their data, their methods and their conclusions. We also go through the Lonnie Zamora incident and talk about what these reports might mean in terms of a public relations device, or in scientific terms.
